Former Miss Universe contestant Kseniya Alexandrova has died following a month-long coma after a freak collision with an elk in Russia. The 30-year-old beauty queen suffered severe head injuries when the animal crashed through the windshield of her luxury Porsche.

Alexandrova was travelling with her husband Tver Oblast when the tragic accident occurred. Oblast was driving the vehicle when the elk suddenly appeared on the road with no warning.

Collision details

Oblast told Russian outlet RIA: "From the moment it jumped out to the impact, a split second passed. I didn't have time to do anything. The elk flew into the car. The blow hit Ksyusha in the head."

The husband survived the crash but described the horrific scene that followed. "She was unconscious, her head was broken, everything was covered in blood," he said.

Oblast explained they were driving slowly and both wearing seatbelts. The low front design of the sports car meant they collided with the elk's legs, and no airbags deployed during the impact.

Medical emergency

A passerby stopped and called for an ambulance, which arrived at the scene after 15 minutes. Alexandrova was first taken to a hospital in Rzhev before being transferred to Moscow's Sklifosovsky Research Institute of Emergency Medicine for specialist treatment.

Oblast detailed the extent of her injuries: "The frontal bones of the skull were broken. It was clear that there was an open head injury." Elks in the Tver Oblast region typically weigh between 700 and 1,100 pounds and stand about five feet tall.

Month-long battle

The model briefly regained consciousness at the Moscow hospital before complications developed. Oblast said: "Meningitis was diagnosed, which turned into more severe inflammatory brain diseases. The tests began to deteriorate, it came to blood sepsis."

Medical teams fought to save her life but ultimately could not overcome the severity of her injuries. "Once they were able to start the heart... But the next day Ksenia died - it was not possible to restart the heart," Oblast explained.

Beauty queen legacy

Alexandrova participated in the Miss Universe pageant in 2017 and was a successful model in Russia. The Miss Universe organisation paid tribute to her following news of her death.

The organisation said her "grace, beauty, and spirit left an unforgettable mark on the Miss Universe family and beyond." They added: "May her memory continue to inspire kindness, strength, and love in all those who were fortunate enough to know her."
