The Oxford Union has "unequivocally" condemned comments made by its incoming president about the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk. George Abaraonye, who became president-elect of the prestigious debating society after a vote earlier this year, posted several messages appearing to celebrate the death of the Donald Trump ally.

Charlie Kirk, aged 31, was killed at a Utah Valley University show on Wednesday in what authorities called a political assassination. The co-founder of youth right-wing organisation Turning Point USA was shot during what appeared to be a targeted attack.

According to The Telegraph, Abaraonye posted messages including "Charlie Kirk got shot, let's f****** go" and "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" on his social media accounts. One of the controversial posts appeared on Abaraonye's Instagram account.

Union's official response

In a statement posted on X on Thursday, the Oxford Union criticised the student's comments and distanced itself from his views. The society said it "firmly opposes all forms of political violence and strongly stands by our commitment to free speech and considerate debate".

The union declared it would "unequivocally condemn the reported words and sentiments expressed by its President-Elect, George Abaraonye, with regards to the passing of Charlie Kirk". The statement emphasised that "his reported views do not represent the Oxford Union's current leadership or committee's view".

The organisation added that "our condolences lie with Charlie Kirk's family, especially his wife and young children, who are enduring such terrible grief". The union reiterated its opposition to all forms of political violence while maintaining its commitment to free speech.

Political reactions and memorial

Kirk and Abaraonye had previously met during a debate on "toxic masculinity" held by the Oxford Union in May, The Telegraph reported. The Oxford Union, founded in 1823, describes itself as "the most prestigious debating society in the world" and has hosted historical figures including Malcolm X.

US President Trump paid tribute to Kirk as a "martyr for truth and freedom" following the shooting. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and other leading UK politicians also expressed condolences online.

A UK offshoot of Turning Point USA will gather in Whitehall on Friday evening to remember Kirk. The memorial event highlights the international impact of his death on conservative political movements.
