A 19-year-old man is fighting for his life after a gunman shot him multiple times in a Liverpool street yesterday evening. Several residents initially mistook the gunshots for fireworks, only realizing the severity hours later when police flooded the area.

The victim suffered gunshot wounds to the leg and back on Manley Road in Huyton around 8:50 pm on November 7. He remains in hospital in critical condition with significant injuries. Police cordoned off the street between Elizabeth Road and Tarbock Road, with crime scene investigators combing the area.

One resident on Tarbock Street told the Liverpool Echo: "We heard what we thought were fireworks. [...] We didn't even see the police. It wasn't until somebody knocked about an hour later that we knew." Another on Elizabeth Street said: "I did hear a few bangs, but I thought it was Bonfire Night. [...] The first time I thought there's something gone on was when I woke up this morning and looked out of the window and saw the police cars here."

Merseyside Police are conducting house-to-house inquiries and reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. Chief Inspector Andy Hughes told the Liverpool Echo: "We are still in the very early stages of an investigation and we are determined to find the person or people responsible. A young man is currently in hospital with significant injuries and I'm sure the community will be utterly appalled at what has happened."

Possible link to earlier attack

Police are investigating whether the shooting links to another violent incident the same day. An attacker stabbed a 15-year-old boy in Stockbridge Village around 3:45 pm, causing serious injuries. Detectives are keeping an open mind about a potential link between both attacks.

Hughes urged anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward urgently: "Information from the public is vital if we are to break down the organised crime groups. [...]"
