Peter Kyle will seek to strengthen trade relationships with both the United States and China this week as the newly appointed Business Secretary embarks on his first major international engagement. The former technology secretary plans to fly from Washington directly to China ahead of President Donald Trump's state visit to Britain.

Kyle will meet White House technology adviser Michael Kratsios and artificial intelligence adviser Sriram Krishnan during his Washington visit. His appointment follows Sir Keir Starmer's recent Cabinet reshuffle, positioning him at the centre of Britain's economic diplomacy.

The minister's engagement with officials from the world's two largest economies signals the Government's pragmatic approach to international trade. His meetings represent efforts to pursue economic growth through relationships with long-time global rivals.

Strengthening trade partnerships

A trade deal between London and Washington was agreed earlier this year, opening what the Government described as "a future UK-US technology partnership". The agreement also establishes the framework for a digital trade deal subject to further negotiation.

Britain simultaneously seeks cooperation with Beijing in non-sensitive areas to boost the UK's struggling economy. The Government maintains it will challenge China where necessary while pursuing beneficial economic relationships.

Minister's growth mission

Kyle emphasised the strategic importance of his Washington engagement ahead of Trump's visit. "My first visit to Washington as Business Secretary is key to strengthening our special relationship as we face global challenges together and building momentum on our tech partnership and trade deal ahead of the historic state visit," he said.

The minister previously declared his commitment to pursuing economic growth during a video meeting with business leaders on his first full day in the role. Speaking to more than 100 chief executives, entrepreneurs and trade union representatives, he stated: "This Government's number one mission is economic growth. We need to crack on and do it."

Kyle added: "We must double down, while being creative and unrelenting in pursuit of our goal." He will spend one day in Washington before travelling directly to China, with Trump's state visit scheduled for September 17.
