A 13-year-old girl has died after getting into difficulty in the North Sea off the coast of North Tyneside. Edie Smart was rescued from the water at Whitley Bay beach on Thursday evening but tragically passed away on Monday.

Police were called to the beach at about 5pm on Thursday after receiving reports that a teenager was in danger in the water. Emergency services quickly responded to rescue Smart, who was from the Monkseaton area.

Girl taken to hospital

Smart was immediately taken to hospital following her rescue from the sea. Despite medical efforts, she died on Monday, four days after the incident.

Northumbria Police confirmed that Smart's family are being supported by specially trained officers during this difficult time. The force has asked for the family's privacy to be respected as they come to terms with their loss.

Police extend condolences

Detective Chief Inspector Emma Smith, of Northumbria Police, described the incident as "extremely tragic". She extended the force's deepest condolences to Smart's family and friends.

"Our specially trained officers will continue to provide them with the support they need at this time," Smith said. "We ask that their privacy be respected as they begin to come to terms with the loss of their loved one."
