Jaywick Sands in Essex has been named England's most deprived neighbourhood for the fourth time. The seaside area topped the latest government deprivation data released Thursday by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

The designation brings renewed attention to persistent challenges in the constituency now represented by Nigel Farage (Reform UK), who was elected MP for Clacton in July 2024. Jaywick previously ranked as the country's most deprived neighbourhood in 2019, 2015, and 2010.

Council Calls for Government Action

Tendring District Council acknowledged the findings in a statement on its website. The latest data highlights «the scale of the challenge» but does not «reflect the progress made since 2019 or the strength of the people who call Jaywick Sands home», the council said.

Council leader Mark Stephenson defended the community's spirit in the statement: «Jaywick Sands is a truly special place -- full of heart, pride and real community spirit.» He added: «Together with local residents, we've made real progress and have a bold plan to go even further. But we cannot do this alone - we need Government to do its part.»

The council is calling for £100 million in national flood funding for Jaywick Sands and a cross-departmental taskforce to address policy barriers. Stephenson said the area «deserves a future that matches its spirit» and expressed readiness to work with residents, national government, and the new Essex Mayor from 2026.

International Attention

The area gained unwanted international attention in 2018 when it featured in a Donald Trump US election campaign advertisement depicting negative consequences. The advert showed unpaved roads and dilapidated homes in Jaywick.
