European leaders from the "coalition of the willing" will hold an emergency conference call on Sunday to coordinate their response following the Trump-Putin Alaska summit. The virtual meeting is co-chaired by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer (Labour), French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The Daily Mail reports the coalition meeting is scheduled for approximately 2pm UK time. The loose partnership of over 30 western countries pledging support for Ukraine aims to protect any peace deal that does not reward Russia for its aggression.

Alaska summit breakdown

The Friday talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska ended without a ceasefire agreement. Putin demanded Ukraine withdraw from Donetsk and Luhansk regions as a condition for ending the war, while offering Trump a freeze along the remaining frontline.

The summit marked Trump's first meeting with Putin since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Herald Scotland reports that Putin achieved significant rehabilitation as a world leader through the Alaska talks, effectively ending his isolation from the West.

Zelenskyy sidelined concerns

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet Trump at the White House on Monday, with potential for a three-way meeting including Putin. European leaders have repeatedly emphasised that Zelenskyy must play a greater role in future talks, as he has been largely sidelined in recent US-Russian diplomacy.

Trump has shifted his position from demanding an immediate ceasefire to pursuing a permanent peace agreement. However, the Express reports that former defence committee chair Tobias Ellwood believes Trump is deliberately setting Zelenskyy up to fail.

European unity response

Starmer praised Trump's efforts following the Alaska talks, stating: "President Trump's efforts have brought us closer than ever before to ending Russia's illegal war in Ukraine. His leadership in pursuit of an end to the killing should be commended."

He added: "While progress has been made, the next steps must be further talks involving President Zelenskyy. The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without him."

The coalition call represents European leaders' determination to maintain Ukrainian sovereignty in any peace negotiations. Monday's White House meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy will be crucial for determining Ukraine's role in future diplomatic efforts.
