An 84-year-old man is fighting for his life after being struck by a car while riding his mobility scooter in North Lanarkshire. The pensioner remains in a critical condition following the collision on Friday afternoon.
The crash occurred at around 4.50pm on Gartlea Road in Airdrie when the mobility scooter was hit by a Vauxhall Mokka driven by a 43-year-old man. Emergency services rushed to the scene to provide immediate medical assistance.
Pensioner rushed to hospital
The injured man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where medical staff described his condition as critical. Police Scotland's road policing unit has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Sergeant Ross Allison said inquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened during the crash. He urged any witnesses or anyone with information that could help the investigation to come forward immediately.
Appeal for dashcam footage
Police are particularly keen to speak to drivers who may have dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident. Officers want anyone who was driving on Gartlea Road around 4.50pm on Friday to review their recordings.
Sergeant Allison said drivers should contact police if their footage contains anything that may be relevant to the investigation. The appeal comes as part of standard procedure to gather as much evidence as possible.
