Two British men have been charged with preparing to commit acts of terrorism by allegedly planning to leave the United Kingdom to join the Islamic State. Oliver William Rea, 24, from Arnold, Nottinghamshire, and Muhammad Bham, 19, from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, were arrested on October 29 as part of an intelligence-led operation.

Rea faces multiple additional charges beyond the primary terrorism preparation count. According to Counter Terrorism Policing North East, he is charged with «three counts of disseminating terrorist publications, two counts of inviting support for a proscribed organisation (Isis) and two counts of expressing support for a proscribed organisation (al Qaida and Isis).» Bham faces the single charge of preparing to commit an act of terrorism.

Multi-Force Operation

Counter Terrorism Policing North East led the investigation that resulted in the arrests. West Yorkshire Police, Nottinghamshire Police, and Counter Terrorism Policing East Midlands supported the operation. Both men are UK nationals.

The court granted warrants for further detention on October 31. Both defendants have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday via videolink. The charges span the period between March 15 and October 29, 2024.
